To volunteer can be doing something you do not necessarily want to be rewarded for, or secretly, subconscious even, want to be rewarded for but will not, or simply do not get rewarded for since others are misusing your efforts, because they have volunteered to be mean.
I only volunteer as much as to say that it is a confusing state of being, being a volunteer.
